MANITOBA CENTENNIAL CENTRE CORPORATION MASTER PLAN

PUBLIC CITY led a team that was engaged by the Manitoba Centennial Centre Corporation (MCCC) to develop a distinct District Plan.  The MCCC District covers a 34-acre area in the East Exchange District in Winnipeg and includes the Centennial Concert Hall, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, and the Manitoba Museum. The MCCC Master Plan seeks to create a vibrant cultural hub in downtown Winnipeg.  Taking cues from the 1961 Master Plan of the same area, the Master Plan connects Main Street to the bank of the Red River and opens up the district for pedestrian oriented activity along James Avenue surrounded by the Centennial Concert Hall, the Manitoba Museum and the Royal Manitoba Theatres.

During this study, parking has been identified as a fundamental issue in the development of the district.  Currently, street parking is limited as a result of an abundance of underused loading zones and areas of no parking.  As residential and commercial development increases in the area, there is new demand for parking. As a result of the District Plan’s findings, a pilot project implemented by the City of Winnipeg will explore reduction of loading zones, back-in angle parking, managed street parking, and the addition of bike lanes and integrated stormwater management in the district.
